About Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the largest mosque in the UAE — white marble domes, reflecting pools and one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets, open to visitors of all faiths.
Completed in 2007, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque can hold more than 40,000 worshippers. It has 82 domes and four minarets, and its main prayer hall holds an enormous hand-knotted carpet and vast crystal chandeliers. Sheikh Zayed, the founding father of the UAE, is buried beside it.
Visitors enter through the underground visitor centre and walk the arcades around the courtyard and into the prayer hall. Entry is free, with free guided tours through the day. Modest dress is required: long, loose clothing covering arms and legs, and a headscarf for women. The mosque closes to tourists on Friday mornings for prayers.
